I am elated to be the recipient of this year’s Paros grant!
Receiving this award is a recognition of the importance of this work and the need to develop better means to monitor the world’s ocean bottom environments. What makes this pursuit worthy of investment, is that if developed to maturity, DAS instrumentation has the potential to revolutionize our ability to monitor these remote and currently inaccessible regions around the world, both on a long-term basis and with dense spatial coverage over areas of 10’s of kilometers with a single instrument; all of this whilst eschewing the high price-tag associated with OBS campaigns, due to the existence of the transcontinental fiber optic cable infrastructure.
On a more personal level, the scholarship is a great morale boost for this crucial final half of my PhD studies. Although the specifics will be worked out soon with my thesis advisor, the funds from this grant may be allocated towards financing an additional experiment at low-frequencies, the purchase of large data storage equipment, attendance to present results at AGU, and/or defraying personal expenses incurred during the thesis write-up stage of this work.

I am very grateful for the support from AGU, and the generosity of the Paros endowment towards promoting this line of research.
Thank you so much!

-Carlos B.
