Abstract Title: Potential of Marine Biomass Energy for Blue Economy Development in the Global South
Abstract Submitted to: GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE
Abstract Text:
The extensive marine resources in the global south (Africa, Latin America, The Caribbean, some parts of Asia and Oceania) ranging from aquatic plants to microalgae to seaweeds provide a vast and undeveloped biomass resource, which can be utilized for bioenergy production. The amalgamation of marine biomass energy into the blue economy in the global south can promote economic expansion, reliable energy sources for distant, coastal, and island populations, encourage the development of maritime energy businesses and collaborate with a young, diverse workforce to meet ambitious renewable energy targets, better living conditions, and increased employment while conserving the ecological health of the ocean ecosystem. Different biomass of marine debris during their utilization might be converted into bio-based goods (bioenergy, edibles, nonedibles). Utilizing the microalgal biomass produced during wastewater treatment, it is possible to create additional carbon-neutral products like feed, bioplastic, biofertilizer, and exopolysaccharides.
However, a few challenges need to be overcome to fully use the potential of marine biomass energy. The optimization of technological constraints, such as efficient harvesting, processing, and conversion technologies is necessary for large-scale production. Frameworks for policy and regulation must be developed to promote the growth of the marine biomass energy sector. These frameworks must guarantee equitable benefit distribution, long-term environmental viability, and compliance with international accords. The global south may tap into the potential of marine biomass energy and use it as an accelerator for a vibrant blue economy by adopting an interdisciplinary strategy that includes scientific research, policy development, and private sector involvement. By utilizing this renewable resource, coastal towns may contribute to global efforts to mitigate climate change and achieve sustainable development goals while also establishing a resilient and sustainable route to economic prosperity.
