Abstract Title: Determining the Extent of a Gravel Layer Using a GPR Survey at the Pniel Archaeological Site, Northern Cape, South Africa
Abstract Submitted to: NEAR-SURFACE GEOPHYSICS
Abstract Text:
Pniel 6 is an archaeological site at the south side of the Vaal river about 20 km north-west of Kimberley where stone tools dating back to the Early and Middle Stone Age have been discovered in a gravel layer that outcrops at the river bank. To gain a better understanding of the subsurface structure, and specifically to trace the extent of this layer, we conducted a GPR survey in June 2019 along nine profiles distributed around the small excavation area using a GSSI SIR-3000 with 400 MHz antenna and survey wheel. Analysis of the data allows us to map a localized 11 x 6 m gravel layer situated 20 to 30 cm below the surface around the excavation unit. These results prompt interpretation about the stratigraphy and geologic history of the site and will aid in the planning of future excavations.`
